These were used during the Boer War era and the back troops up to WWI. Many of these began as a Pattern 1886 bayonet but then were upgraded with streamlined cross guard and stepped up muzzle ring. Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with average spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have scrapes and oxidation. The metal is in the white but the coloring has started to change to a darker patina color. The rivets securely fasten the checkered grips to the tang. They have light oxidation. The checkering has worn thin and there are chips and scattered smooth areas. The grip panels have darkened with age. The spine and sides have light impact marks, oxidation and scrapes. There are no nicks or dings on the blade. It appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white with scattered oxidation and discoloration from age. The left side ricasso is marked "189 / WILKINSON / SWORDCOMPANY / LONDON". The spine is marked with a crown / 35 / W" and crown / 49 / W". The right side ricasso is marked with the British broad arrow / "WD" and a proof mark. The left side pommel is marked "9193". The soft leather / metal scabbard is in Poor - Fair condition, considering its age. The locket is securely attached to the leather body, but has a light wiggle due to the leather shrinking with age. The bottom half of the scabbard is missing, partial leather and the chape. The locket has scrapes and oxidation. The frog stud is securely fastened. The leather has dried out, light cracks and a whole near the stitching. The stitching is sewn tightly. Again, roughly the bottom 1/3 of the scabbard is missing. The finish is mostly intact. The locket top is marked with a serial number "9064". This bayonet and partial scabbard will be a great addition to your British Martini Henry rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
