Introduction Reading Horizons Discovery® is an explicit, systematic, research-based phonics program based on the Reading Horizons method. Multi-sensory techniques are employed both in the classroom via direct instruction and through the use of the interactive computer software program. The classroom manuals and computer software are correlated to support each other, but each can be used independently of the other for instructional purposes. All students will benefit from using the explicit, sequential, direct classroom instruction the Reading Horizons method has to offer. It is highly recommended that the Reading Horizons Discovery® computer software be used to reinforce the skills learned. In addition, it is recommended students be given the computer-administered assessments on the software to determine their baseline data prior to beginning the course. Reading Horizons Discovery® logically and sequentially teaches the framework of phonics. While instruction is based on teaching the 42 Sounds of the Alphabet, Five Phonetic Skills, and Two Decoding Skills, students simultaneously learn handwriting, reading, spelling, grammar, pronunciation, listening, and thinking skills. ORGANIZATION OF THE MANUAL The Reading Horizons Discovery® Kindergarten Teacher’s Manual is divided into two chapters that correlate to the two chapters taught in the computer program.
