Leather strapping adorned with Cowrie Shells. Container has a band of interwoven fibre around neck. After use, the container is cleansed with charcoal. This operation is called 'qoraasuu' and gives the milk a rich fragrance and distinctive flavor. The inner surface is black, dense and aromatic. The Borana people of Kenya and Ethiopia are semi-nomadic pastoralist herders belonging to the Oromo ethnic group. The word 'Borana' refers to the people, their language and translates as 'friend' or 'kind person'. They make most of their domestic goods from gourds, wood and skin.
