Description: Title: The Nativity. Miniature From an Illuminated Manuscript Book of Hours, Use of Rome(?), Rouen. Circa 1480-1500 Condition: Very Good A vividly illuminated miniature of The Nativity, from a manuscript Book of Hours, produced sometime from the last quarter of the 15th century. To the borders are bright acanthus leaves and flowers highlighted with gold, and a bird to the lower border, and there is a large 3-line illuminated initial below, along with several smaller initials against red and blue. To the verso are 19 lines of text written in a bastard script, with several more illuminated initials against red and blue, as well as line fillers. Though the usage cannot be exactly confirmed, comparisons to one manuscript has helped a bit more in understanding the localization and usage. When referring to the work Medieval and Renaissance Illuminated Manuscripts in Australian Collections, Manuscript Number 84, a Book of Hours, use of Rome, Rouen, c. 1500-1510, bears some similarity. The style of illumination, pointing to the bright borders and bird, as well as the ornate three-line initial and bastard script, points more to the late 15th century. The stylistic facial characteristics as well, with heavy and pronounced eyelids, are also more indicative of the late 15th century. The leaf contains the End of Lauds from the Hours of the Virgin, and the beginning of Prime. One illuminated manuscript on parchment, 17.5 x 10.1 cm. Miniature dimensions, 6 x 4.4 cm This manuscript is in very good shape, with very little soiling to the leaf. There is a very small tear to the lower margin, not affecting any illumination or text. The vellum has stretched a bit due to age and environmental exposure. There are old remnants of tape to the recto, when the leaf was once nestled in a frame.I typically ship within 1-2 business days of receiving payment.
