About Bob Ross Bob Ross spent his entire artistic career in front of the TV camera, filming "The Joy of Painting", becoming one of the most beloved advocates for painting in the late 20th century. Known for his soothing voice and "happy" images, he captivated millions of viewers and became a living icon. Ross began his career in the US Air Force, serving for 20 years, mostly in Alaska. In 1981, he left the military to pursue his passion for painting. During his early years, he struggled financially and adopted his signature perm to save on haircut costs, a style he wore and disliked throughout his life. Dedicated to landscapes, Ross created approximately 30,000 paintings filled with trees, clouds, lakes, streams, and occasional cabins. As a sincere environmentalist, he often included small animals in his paintings, sometimes bringing them to the studio. Rarely depicting human figures, he used the "wet on wet" or "Alla Prima" technique, dating back to the Renaissance. Despite his celebrity status and unique artistic concept, Ross's style is challenging to classify within contemporary art, though it bears some resemblance to Pop Art. Apart from early gold pans distributed in Alaska, he rarely sold his works. More than twenty years after his death, Ross remains an Internet sensation. In 2015, over 400 episodes of "The Joy of Painting" were added to his official YouTube channel, and in 2016, "Beauty is Everywhere" began streaming on Netflix. His legacy is honored through various tributes, including Google Doodles and birthday celebrations. A calm and joyful person, Ross believed that anyone could paint with enough practice. "We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents", he often said, endearing him to audiences. Born Robert Norman Ross in Daytona Beach, Florida, on October 29, 1942, he passed away from lymphoma on July 4, 1995, at the age of 52.
