Description: Blow-Up Original Sound Track LP 1966 1st Press MGM Records SE-447ST Herbie Handcock The Yardbirds EXThe music from this Cult Classic movie was composed, conducted and played by Herbie Handcock. The brilliant young composer was hand-picked by Director Antonioni (himself a Jazz fan), to write the score for Blow-Up. Handcock, whose best-known work is a simple gospel-influenced tune, Watermelon Man, popularized by Mongo Santamaria, provided a wide variety of material for the film; blues, rock and roll, abstract jazz, Latin-American tunes and even a couple of "Mancini-ish" numbers. Born in Chicago 1940, Hancock has apprenticed as pianist-composer to among others, Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Oliver Nelson and Miles Davis. Most recently he has been identified with the jazz avant-garde-those musicians who are working in various ways toward greater spontaneity and "freedom" in their music. His score for Blow-Up reflects this concern. The Yardbirds - The five Yardbirds who appear in the Blow-Up Jazz Club and final party scene, got their start in England. Replacing the Rolling Stones as the resident instrumental vocal group at the Crawdaddy Club, they helped establish this night spot as one of the post popular "let-loose" teenage places in England.
