BLOOD ON THE PAINTED MOUNTAIN - Zulu Victory & Defeat at Hlobane & Kambula, HBdj

Description: BLOOD ON THE PAINTED MOUNTAIN - Zulu Victory and Defeat at Hlobane and Kambula, 1879. RON LOCK London 1995, Greenhill, 6 x 9 , UK first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, Fine/Fine cond, 224 pp, illus, maps, bibliog, index. ------------------ The Zulu stronghold of Hlobane (`the painted Mountain') dominated a vast area of disputed land in northern Natal. It was the scene of a terrible reverse for the British, but at Kambula the next day they inflicted an even more catastrophic defeat upon the Zulus. The Zulus never fully recovered from this repulse, and it marked the turning point in the war:The slaughter at Hlobane was second only to that at Isandlwana two months earlier which ravaged morale in the British Army. This was in part responsible for the highly questionable conduct of some of the officers when faced with the enemy at Hlobane, leading to the British rout at Devil's Pass. Without defeat at Hlobane, however, victory at Kambula might not have been possible: the warriors of the leading Zulu regiments, over-confident after their resounding success, were easily provoked into an ill-judged attack on the enemy camp at Kambula, and exhausted themselves before the British survivors of the previous day's battle set out in pursuit, leaving 1,000 Zulu dead on the Zunguin Plain -------------------Ron Lock examines Hlobane as the only engagement of the war that the British fought entirely as a mounted force (although supported by Swazi foot auxiliaries). The Colonial horsemen of Colonel Evelyn Wood's No. 4 Column at Hlobane, local volunteers almost to a man, fought daringly but received little credit for their sacrifices on behalf of the British Empire. In Britain the shattering defeat was quickly passed over, the deaths of the local volunteers going mostly unmourned and the news immediately superseded by victory at Kambula.Using a wealth of new evidence drawn from a wide variety of sources, Ron Lock ensures that praise and blame are now fairly apportioned, in this gripping account of a vital part of the Anglo-Zulu War.********************************************************************* THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS.INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE NOTICE ! AS OF MAY 14th, 2007, THE US POSTAL SYSTEM HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED INTERNATIONAL MAIL RATES - ALL SURFACE MAIL HAS BEEN DROPPED, THERE WILL ONLY BE TWO CLASSES OF AIR MAIL= PRIORITY OR FIRST CLASS. Due to increasingly higher U.S. postal rates, and the many packages that we have lost or damaged, on International Mail, we now only will ship internationally via E-Bay’s Global shipping program, which goes by courier services. Although expensive, many times they are cheaper than what I could send it for by US Mail – and much more secure. Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts". U.S. and International government regulations prohibit such behavior. ON PAPER BACK BOOKS & MAGAZINES, MANY TIMES WE CAN COMBINE SEVERAL BOOKS AND SAVE POSTAGE IN THE US ONLY. If you have further questions - happy to answer them - please email us.Please browse our other items and bookmark our site - we constantly add new items. We pack your item extremely carefully so you will receive it in the best condition. This sometimes causes us to be a day or two late in processing orders if we have a good number of sales as we normally only drive to the Post Office on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Please be patient- we aim to provide the best service we can. We have been in business 50 years. VINTAGE PAPERBACK BOOKS Please be aware that the binding glue in vintage paperbacks is likely to be much drier than newer books, and thus more fragile than more modern printings. Paper also can be sometimes somewhat brittle. All vintage paperbacks require proper & careful care in handling & reading or the spine glue will crack !!. SHIPPING TIMES WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING 2 – 6 WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF MAIL USED . Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no rhyme or reason as to why. IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE. PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED. ( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are being implemented by the US Post Office - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient ) WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING . Bob Ruman
