Description: Synopsis: This short monograph speaks to the history of Colorado as a refuge for consumptives in the later 1800s and beyond. Before we understood germ theory, the widespread belief was that tuberculosis, the White Plague, was hereditary, and it's treatment was clean, dry air and good nutrition. Colorado capitalized on that belief and welcomed consumptives to come west to its health spas. Once it was figured that instead tuberculosis was contagious, some became less welcoming of those so afflicted, but still many consumptives traveled to Colorado for treatment and the hope of a cure. To that end, four famous sanitoria were established in the Denver area. Each generally served the demographic that had established them, but all of them also served anyone who needed their help--the poor, the desperate, and even the incurable. The four were: National Jewish Hospital for Consumptives ( which is now National Jewish Hospital which specializes in treating respiratory disease), the Jewish Consumptives Relief Society, the Evangelical Lutheran Sanitorium ( which is now a general hospital, Lutheran Medical Center) and the Swedish National Sanitorium for Consumptives ( which is also a general hospital, Swedish Medical Center, and now is also a referral site for neurotrauma and stroke care). ______________________________________ Please view the pictures/scans.
