Description: You are buying 25 Black Walnut seeds collected in October of 2023. The seeds have been cleaned in 10% bleach/water, thoroughly rinsed, dried and refrigerated. The parent tree is very prolific and produces a large crop of nuts each year. Black Walnut trees are large deciduous trees and grow very fast and can reach a height of ~100 feet tall with a rounded crown. Generally, these trees can grow fast once established. In good soil with adequate light and moisture, Black Walnut trees can grow 4+ feet in one year. The parent tree has been grown naturally in the midwest. Did you know that a trees new growth happens primarily before the end of July? This year we have had a very wet spring followed by very hot drought conditions. These harsh conditions did not affect the good crop. Black walnuts are a native range is from New England states to Norther Texas to Florida. They appear in a variety of geographies from hills to low-lands. Planting two trees helps to ensure tree reproduction. In Fall the leaves turn yellow and have a strong aromatic smell when crushed. The nuts are edible and encased in a yellow-green husk which turn black after the nut falls to the ground. The husks are used for stains, dyes and some medicines. The nuts are edible in many foods and for wildlife, but the meat can be difficult to remove from the shell. Walnut wood is highly valued for a lumber including cabinets, furniture, and fine veneers.
