Bingata is a textile dyeing technique created in Okinawa for clothing used by specificclasses of Ryukyu-society, including royal and shizoku families. Bingata textiles are dyed in unique combinations of gorgeous colors, using a resist-dyeing approach with hand-cut paper patterns and a wide variety of motifs. The enthralling results powerfully convey the vigor of the life that inspires many people. The bingata techniques used today were established in around the middle of the 18th century. At that time, dyers working in Shuri and Naha had access to a wide range of materials through foreign trade, and had the patronage of the Ryukyu king. However, after the kingdom collapsed, bingata producers lost their backing and the craft began to decline. World War II then dealt a severe blow to the industry. Most examples of bingata that we can now see were brought to mainland Japan before the war. Consequently, such old bingata textiles are a significant resource for researchers investigating old bingata, and for the craftsmen and women working to keep bingata in production today. This exhibition presents superb examples of bingata from the time of the Ryukyu dynasty, revealing the wide variety of expressions that the technique encompasses, from large, bold pictorial compositions created by linking several paper patterns together, to fine patterns used in the lining of the more casual Hanaori kasuri costume. A number of the paper patterns used to create bingata are also exhibited, as are furoshiki cloths created by applying the resist freehand instead of using a stencil. This year, 2012, is the 40th Anniversary of the Reversion of Okinawa to Japan. Commemorating that anniversary, the exhibition presents a marvelous opportunity to re-discover and enjoy the wonderful colors and shapes of the Ryukyu culture. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to each of the collectors for giving permission to exhibit these precious works, as well as to all parties who provided the and cooperation that made this exhibition possible.supportApril 2012 International BuyersPlease Note: Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up -?do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts" - US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior.
