The Outlaws had made a tradition of year-ending, new Year's Eve hometown concerts in Tampa Bay for as long as anybody could remember. That is... until 1981, when they decided to play a sold-out, West Palm, New Year's Eve show instead. A show that would be canceled due to a nervous and ill-prepared local police chief who became concerned about possible fan mayhem following comments made by Jones to a local newspaper. As a result, for the first time "since I was 13," bandmate Hughie Thomasson was quoted as saying, he (and/or The Outlaws) did not perform on New Year's Eve. Disappointed, the band simply did the next best thing and turned this particular December 30th concert into an extended bash that went well into New Year’s Eve morning.
