Scanlon in New York City, the letter states: "I certainly appreciate very much your letter of congratulation on my nomination as Republican candidate for Speaker of the 72nd Congress. It is a great honor to receive the nomination and I think I have received as much pleasure in the messages from my friends showing their appreciation as from any other source." Bertrand Hollis Snell (1870 – 1958) was an American politician who represented upstate New York's 31st district in the United States House of Representatives from 1915 until he retired in 1939. In 1923, Snell became chairman of the important House Rules Committee. This position gave him great power in Congress and the Republican party, because he was in a position to frame legislation and legislative strategy. When Nicholas Longworth ascended to the Speakership and John Q. Tilson became majority floor leader in 1925, they, along with Snell, effectively controlled in concert the House of Representatives. Snell's dream of eventually becoming Speaker of the House was dashed with the onset of the Great Depression. In the wake of the 1930 midterm elections, the Republicans lost control of the House. After Longworth died in April 1931, Tilson and Snell tussled for the job of minority leader. Although the president favored Tilson, Snell won the race. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
