Description: This is a rare "THE CAST" Theatre Guide from the week of January 11th, 1936 (Volume 138, No. 1540) featuring BERT LAHR on the front cover. He was one of the stars of the Original Broadway production of the Twelfth Stage Edition of the musical revue "GEORGE WHITE'S SCANDALS" at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City. (The 12th edition of the "Scandals" opened December 25th, 1935 at the New Amsterdam Theatre and ran for 110 performances before going on the road.) ..... This series of revues, produced by White from 1919 through 1939, were given to elaborate show numbers much like the "Ziegfeld Follies", but were less ornate and cumbersome. Their comedy tended to be far more topical and, because White had been a dancer, the productions were fast paced and featured better choreography and music than similar revues ..... The production starred RUDY VALLEE, BERT LAHR, WILLIE & EUGENE HOWARD, GRACIE BARRIE, CLIFF EDWARDS and JANE COOPER and the cast included HAL FORDE, ESTELLE JAYNE, SAM, TED & RAY, RICHARD LANE, STANLEY TWINS, LOIS EXKHART, PEGGY MOSELEY, HELENE MILLER, ANN LAXTON, CLAIRE McQUILLEN, JEAN GALE, HAROLD WILLARD, APOLLO QUARTETTE, ALICE CARLETON, EDNA PAGE, VERNA LONG, ALMA SAUNDERS, AUDREY HAYES and THE GEORGE WHITE GIRLS ..... CREDITS: Music by RAY HENDERSON; Lyrics by JACK YELLEN; Sketches by GEORGE WHITE, WILLIAM K. WELLS and HOWARD A. SCHIEBLER; Sets designed by RUSSELL PATTERSON and WALTER JAGEMANN; Costumes designed by CHARLES LeMAIRE; Choreographed by RUSSELL MARKERT Conceived, Produced and Directed by GEORGE WHITE ..... DETAILS: The 38 page booklet measures 3" X 5 1/2" inches and includes the cast lists and performance details for many of the current Broadway productions. Among the current shows were the George and Ira Gershwin classic "PORGY AND BESS" starring TODD DUNCAN and ANNE BROWN, the Ayn Rand melodrama "NIGHT OF JANUARY 16TH", the Maxwell Anderson play "WINTERSET" starring BURGESS MEREDITH, the Sydney Kingsley play "DEAD END" featuring the "Dead End Kids" including GABRIEL DELL, the revival of William Shakespeare's "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW" starring ALFRED LUNT and LYNN FONTANNE, the Billy Rose musical "JUMBO" with music and lyrics by RICHARD RODGERS and LORENZ HART and starring JIMMY DURANTE and the PAUL WHITEMAN ORCHESTRA, the Cole Porter musical "JUBILEE" starring MARY BOLAND and the musical holiday "AT HOME ABROAD" starring BEATRICE LILLIE and ETHEL WATERS. The back cover shows ETHEL WILSON (shown in the last scanned image), who was appearing in "FIRST LADY" at the Music Box Theatre ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is a tear on the front cover near the top seam, a split at the bottom seam, light rust stains at the staples and minor edge wear. Despite these flaws, this rare publication will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
