The group takes the legacy of John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp as well as closer to home influences such as pianist Keith Jarrett's Scandinavian quartet of the 1970s and gives these a contemporary treatment, making fresh and bold statements. The charismatic saxophone player, Kjetil Moster leads the group and he is backed by a powerful rhythm section that features pianist Erlend Slettevoll. In 2007 The Core linked up with Norway's leading big band, the Bergen Big Band, for a performance at the NattJazz festival. For this special occasion reed player Vidar Johansen arranged the music from John Coltrane's iconic Meditations (Impulse!, 1966) album for small group and big band. These accomplished arrangements stress Coltrane's melodic themes while still calling for spirited and passionate conviction from all the musicians, as befits such a monumental work.
