Description: These are truly picturesque images of famous Percheron horses of Baltimorean, General William T. Walters (better known for his contributions of the Walters Art Gallery to the City of Baltimore). He imported and bred Percheron horses while in exile in France during the American Civil War. The image offers a glimpse into life during the “Golden Age” of early Victorian America. The prints are made by the photogravure process which was created in the 1850s and perfected during the 1860s. These images where signed by“Schreiber 1886”. The prints are on“India-paper,” which is a very tough and thin paper, similar to today’s“baumwad” or “abaca”. The India-paper is mounted to a buff-colored sheet with the title of the print and information on the horses shown. The print is in superb condition and of high quality; it amazing that this print is more than 130 years old. The prints i are in horizontal format and reads “PERCHERON BROOD-MARE ALENE / Imported (1866) by W. T.Walters / 16 1/2 Hands. 7 Years”. the other reads “PERCHERON BROOD-MARES NEVA , MAGGIE AND MYRA/ Imported (1886) by W. T.Walters / 16 1/2 Hands. 5 Years”.
