Bayonet Letter Opener U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Award 1979-80

Description: Vintage engraved M-1 Garand bayonet letter opener awarded by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Leavenworth, KS. The blade of the bayonet letter opener is engraved with the recipient’s name and “CGSC 79-80” and a miniature version of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College distinctive unit insignia is attached to the ricasso (area of the blade adjacent to the guard). The bayonet is attached to the woven area of a wood framed plaque. The bayonet letter opener is approximately 7 7/8” long and the wood framed plaque measures approximately 6 5/8” x 12 5/8”. There is a wire hanger on the back of the frame. There is a sticker on the back of the plaque indicating it was professionally framed by The Frame Maker in Manhattan, KS. The plaque is from the estate of a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel. The bayonet letter opener appears to be in very good to excellent used condition with signs of wear and age, such as minor scratches, scrapes, abrasions, nicks, pits, indentations, smudges, and rub marks (it’s possible that some of these blemishes are a result of the manufacturing process). The wood frame appears to be in good used condition with signs of wear and age, such as scratches, scrapes, abrasions, nicks, chips, indentations, and wear on the edges, corners, and raised areas. The woven area of the plaque appears to be in very good to excellent used condition with some loose and frayed fabric threads. The frame’s paper backing appears to be in “good minus” used condition with signs of wear and age, such as scratches, scrapes, abrasions, tears, punctures, wrinkles, creases, and folded corners. There appears to be adhesive residue and remnants of “bumper pads” in the lower corners of the paper backing. The sticker on the paper backing appears to be in very good used condition with scratches, scrapes, abrasions, and a slight fold on the lower left corner.
