Description: Bavaria Johann Seltmann Cup & Saucer 1940's-1960's Vohenstrauss Maroon Gold HTF Exquisite Decorative Demitasse CUP & SAUCER Set, GOLD Scrollwork on MAROON w/Gold, from Vohenstrauss, Bavaria, Germany, circa 1940's-1960's DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand decorated cup & saucer set was produced with a beautiful gold scrollwork on the dark maroon. The design looks so classic. The simple handle is painted in solid gold paint while the foot of the cup is trimmed in a wide band of gold. The smooth rims are also trimmed in gold as is the verge of the saucer. This makes a beautiful display set or can be used every day. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold. DIMENSIONS: The cup has a diameter of 3" with a height of 1 3/4". The saucer has a diameter of 4 5/8" and height of 9/16". The cup's capacity is 3 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: Brothers, Christian & Johann Seltmann, opened their factory in 1901 in Vohenstraub, Bavaria. Disputes caused Christian to leave & establish his own factory in Weiden, Bavaria in 1910. Johann constantly rebuilt and modernized his factory in Vohenstrauß. By 1914, it employed 500 workers. He died in 1921. Management of the company passed to his sons, Robert and Christian. After the WWII, the factory was closed for some time because of critical damages to the factory buildings. Robert Seltmann died in 1956. In 1970’s, the company struggled to survive with a more and more competitive market, but remained in business until 1995. The underglaze Eberthal Series mark on the cup & saucer is identified as used in the 1940's-1960's time period as cited by the website marks4ceramics as mark #1.
