Battle of Rain Etching by Matthäus Merian from Theatrum Europaeum Vol II 1633

Description: Here we have a rare original copper engraving/etching of The Battle of Rain am Lech victory of the Protestant Swedes against the Catholic troops of Tilly 15th April 1632 from Theatrum Europaeum Volume II 1633 by Matthäus Merian the Elder (September 22, 1593 – June 19, 1650). It is displayed in a simple gold leaf frame. We have removed the piece for inspection and found it attached to an early page with pencil notations, in German, at the bottom. We did not remove the print from this backing as we were in fear of tearing it. Also a pencil notation on the back of the piece (see last photos). It has been professionally re-matted with acid free materials. The entire piece with mat and frame measures 15 1/4" by 19 1/2". The print itself measures 8 1/8" by 13". The work is in very nice vintage condition with very fine contrast. One fold from the book and three creases at the top title that look to have occurred during printing. One other crease near the bottom right (see last photos). Ready to hang. Please excuse reflections on the glass. Do not under estimate the value of buying your art already framed. A framing job such as this would be 100 dollars or more at a store such as Michael's. Battle of Rain 40,000 Swedish Troops under the command of Gustavus Adolphus battle against 25,000 Troops under the Catholic League under the command of under Johan Tserclaes, Count of Tilly. Battle Gustavus built a bridge of boats across the Lech River near the city of Rain through the night before the battle. In the morning, He sent three hundred Finnish Hackapelite troops across the river while being fired at. The Hackapelites dug earthworks for batteries which then protected the rest of Gustavus' army as they crossed the river. As soon as his army had crossed the river, Gustavus immediately and successfully stormed the hill. Tilly was shot in the leg early in the battle and was moved to the rear; his second in command, Johann von Aldringen, was knocked unconscious with a skull fracture minutes later. Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria, ordered an immediate retreat to save the now leaderless army, leaving most of the Catholic League's baggage and artillery in the field. The army itself may only have escaped destruction due to a storm and high winds blocking roads in the night that followed Aftermath The immediate result of the battle was that Bavaria lay open for occupation by the Swedish army, enabling Gustavus Adolphus to temporarily threaten the Austrian heartland. The death of Tilly also led to the recall of Albrecht von Wallenstein into Imperial army. He would build a new army and challenge the Swedes at Nürnberg. Shipping weight, well packed, is 5 1/2 lbs. Insurance has been added to the shipping cost as per Ebay's mandate. Please be sure to enlarge the photos for more detail and don't hesitate to ask questions. We are always happy to combine items to save you money on shipping. Normally it is a simple matter to add the weight of the various items and then calculate shipping from the total.
