Description: Balloon Milkweed (50+ SEEDS) Gomphocarpus Physocarpus 2023 CROP - US Grown Butterfly Food This woody milkweed is perfect for the back of your flower beds as each plant easily grows to over 5+ feet when grown in full sun and supplied with regular watering. Butterflies will deposit their eggs on the underside of the plants' leaves; eggs will hatch shortly and begin to eat the leaves and seed pods until they are ready for the metamorphosis from larvae to butterfly. Adult plants have a columnar shape with long thin limbs that bend and give the white and soft lavender flower clusters a pendulous appearance. After pollination flowers will give way to leathery balloon-like seed pods that resemble hairy balls. Allow seed pods to mature on the plant to save seeds or use long limbs with pods in fresh or dry arrangements. Balloon Milkweed is hardy in zones 8 and above. However, to avoid disease and promote migration, I personally cut down my plants a month before winter. Normally , I allow one or two saplings to slowly grow over the winter. These will be my mature plants early the next year. Seeds do not need stratification or any special treatment. Bury seeds 0.25" deep in a sunny location and keep them watered; they will begin germinating within the week. In colder climates, seeds can be started indoors and transplanted after the chance of frost has passed. CAUTION: ALL PARTS OF THIS PLANT ARE POISONOUS. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND PETS.
