Description: Reportedly the only Confederate postal marking from Bacon's Castle, Surry County VA. List of slave names and ages; Elizabeth 8 years old, Mary 5, Jefferson Davis 2, Jennys child about 12 months old. "35" probably refers to Jennys age. From Wikipedia: "Bacon's Castle, also variously known as "Allen's Brick House" or the "Arthur Allen House" is located in Surry County, Virginia and is the oldest documented brick dwelling in the United States. Built in 1665, it is noted as an extremely rare example of Jacobean architecture in the New World. The house became known as "Bacon's Castle" because it was occupied as a fort or "castle" by the followers of Nathaniel Bacon during Bacon's Rebellion in 1676". Dear Cousin Henry, Dec 11 1862I received your letter yesterday and was glad to hear from you all. I am sure very thankful to you for taking the trouble that you have done with my servants. I am very well satisfied with what you have done. I wish you to tell Joe about being careful when he is driving horses. He is so apt to venture too much with horses and think he can manage any horse he ever saw, so I thought it best to make it known to you as you may see that he does not get into difficulty with one or no accident might happen to him occasioned by a horse. I think you may hire him out for the next year if you can get a good price and good place but I have thought it over and over and I think it best to sell Jennie as I know she will never do me any more good. She has told me very often that she could not live with me and so if she cannot live with me and let me raise the children that she may have, I don't see that she is of any use to me and if i keep her she will hardly have any more children, so keep it a secret from her until you get ready to make sale of her that is. I reckon you had better see what you can get for her and see if you can invest the money in some way that will be safe, say in a lot or a farm, or in a young girl that will perhaps have some increase. You must let me hear from you by the next mail and direct your letter to Bacon's Castle, Surry Co. Let me know if you get the Bacon's drawers. give my love to all of all of your family. Yours Affectionately, Lucille G. Harrison Note- The Bacon's drawers refers to underwear, (also pillowcases, sacks etc) that were stuffed with plunder from "Bacon's Castle" by Bacon's followers when they were chased out by British marines. Folks are still looking for the Bacon's drawers.
