Description: Pictured here is a First Edition, First Printing of Joyce Maynard’s debut novel, BABY LOVE, published in 1981 by Alfred A. Knopf, in excellent condition, in a very good dust jacket protected by a Mylar cover. Maynard burst onto the literary scene as a teenager, most notably for her article about growing up in the 1960s "An 18-Year-Old Looks Back on Life,” which appeared in the New York Times Magazine. Afterwards, Maynard famously received a letter from J. D. Salinger, then 53 years old, who complimented her writing, and later dropped out of Yale to live with Salinger, a period in which she wrote her first book, a memoir. Baby Love covers several days in the lives of a group of young girls in New Hampshire, one of whom is pregnant while the other three are already mothers. Maynard’s talent for voice is already present in this fine debut. Book: Very Good to Near Fine. Quarter bound in blue cloth and cream paper. Internally clean and unblemished. No writing, notations or bookplates. An excellent first edition in a Very Good dust jacket, whose only flaws are some smudges and staining around the joints and minor rubbing, with no tears or chips. Protected in a removable archival cover. A lovely first edition of the debut novel from a writer of great cultural significance.
