It was the main, along with the Halifax, heavy bomber of the Royal Air Force during World War II (it accounted for 3/4 of the entire bomb load dropped in WWII by British aircraft).The geographical position of the United States and Great Britain led to the adoption of a military doctrine on the use of aviation to destroy the industrial potential of Germany and its allies. During the Second World War in these countries, emphasis was placed on the creation of heavy four-engine bombers.In England, such aircraft began to be designed in the mid-30s.
