Description: Vintage circa 1950's oil on canvas autumn landscape of a creek surrounded by trees, signed lower right by listed California artist TERESA (TESS) RAZALLE-CARTER (1888-1972). Measurements are 24" by 30" (30 1/2" by 36 1/2" framed). The scene could possibly be somewhere in the San Gabriel Mountains or Santa Monica Mountains. The artist was born in early Los Angeles and lived in Southern California her entire life. She lived in Pasadena for many years, becoming strongly associated with Santa Monica later, where her 1942 14th Street studio became somewhat of a center for local artistic culture (see photo of partial label from that address). The artist married photographer Fred William Carter, himself distinguished in the art of photography. Razalle-Carter painted landscapes, coastals, mission scenes, and mystical scenes. In 1937, she competed to create the city's seal; a composite consisting of her work and that of another artist was ultimately chosen. She also created murals, illustrated children's books, and designed a commemorative plaque for the 1930's California visit of the Old Ironsides ship. The artist passed away in her mid 80's, in Thousand Oaks, in 1972.
