Description: DANIEL E. SICKLES. Daniel E. Sickles (1819–1914) was a Union general who fought in the Peninsula Campaign, Seven Days Battles, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, and lost his leg at the Battle of Gettysburg. He served as Minister to Spain and as a U.S. Representative. Sickles controversially shot and killed the son of Francis Scott Key, Philip Barton Key II, for having an affair with his wife and managed to secure an acquittal with the first defense of insanity. Sickles unsigned requesting President Theodore Roosevelt and Secretary of State Elihu Root appoint his son to the State Department shortly after Roosevelt’s second inauguration: “I have written to Secretary Root and to the President asking for an appointment in the Department of State for my son Stanton Sickles.” “I HAVE WRITTEN TO SECRETARY ROOT AND TO THE PRESIDENT ASKING FOR AN APPOINTMENT IN THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE FOR MY SON STANTON SICKLES.” Contains two pages on a single leaf with personal letterhead, measures 8.25 by 5.25 inches, created in New York City in [1905], and in very fine condition with toning.
