Description: A collection of 5 scarce documents issued by the radical feminist group The Feminists Author: Various authors Title: A collection of 5 scarce documents issued by the radical feminist group The Feminists Publication: New York: The Feminists, 1968-1970 Description: The Feminists were founded in 1968 in New York City as the October 17th Movement and were one of the first second wave feminist groups to promote radical feminism. Led by Ti-Grace Atkinson, who'd been the New York chapter president of NOW before splitting with them over their moderate approach to abortion rights and marriage inequality, the group held extreme positions on marriage ("Marriage means rape and legalized slavery"), pregnancy ("It's so immature to grow babies in people's bodies.") and sex ("sex is a neurotic manifestation of oppression. It's like a mass psychosis."). Married women were limited to 1/3 of the group's members, although later they were prohibited from joining altogether when the group advocated celibacy and political lesbianism. Atkinson left the group in 1971 and The Feminists disbanded in 1973. Other members included Anne Koedt (who left in 1969 to form New York Radical Feminists), Sheila Michaels (a member of CORE who coined the prefix 'Ms.'), Barbara Mehrhof (later an organizer with Women Against Pornography), Pamela Kearon, and Sheila Cronan. Included in this small grouping are: Atkinson, Ti-Grace. Vaginal Orgasm as a Mass Hysterical Survival Response. April 5, 1968, 3 p.Atkinson, Ti-Grace. Radical Feminism. May 1969, 8 p.Cronan, Sheila.
