Description: Authentic Tibetan rug, saddle 'blanket' or meditation mat.Handknotted in wool yarn. Unusual asymmetrical motif, with red lotus or chrysanthemum and dragon and other symbols on dark blue background. Measures approx 28" by 22" or approx 71cm x 56cm. Last photo, horiizontal, is back of weaving. I personally bought my collection of small Tibetan handwoven mats and rugs in Lhasa in the late 1990s. I bought about six of these small handknotted mats or rugs from a Tibetan who was selling his father's collection at the Jokhang Temple in central Lhasa. The experience of true Tibetan spiritual culture and the artifacts from it is no longer accessible. This piece shows fraying, holes from wear, use, age. Tibetan tradition is to mend with handwoven textiles along the sides to stabilize the wear on the edges. There is also internal wear but it is obviously unique in the assymetrical and seemingly random composition of Buddhist symbols. Selling as-is: could be framed like this or repaired or have backing added to stabilize wear and make it into a meditation mat.
