Description: This hand-carved and decorated traditional wooden "Sand Goanna" was purchased in 2009 from Maruku Arts https://maruku.com.au/ which specializes in both traditional and contemporary Anangu art from western Australia. This piece is signed, includes a Certificate of Authenticity, and has been in a private collection since the original purchase. This traditional Sand Goanna carving measures 10.5" length and 2" tall. The design is burned into the wood using wire heated on a wood fire. This piece is a contemporary carving of the sand lizard, a common animal frequently hunted as a food source as well as recognized for it's association with the Creation stories of these indigenous people. These lizards are frequently represented in contemporary and traditional Aboriginal painting, carvings and other artwork. From the gallery website: "The Goanna has a prominent place in the culture of Indigenous Australians. This includes totemic relationships, representations in Dreamtime stories, and as an important source of food and ingredient for bush medicine. Due to this importance, representations of goannas are very common in Aboriginal art. They can be painted figuratively or by using symbols and ancient designs which represent the tracks left behind as they move across the landscape."
