Norfolk Island 1974 Royal VisitThis minisheet consists of the stamps from the Norfolk Island: 1974 Royal Visit stamp issue incorporated into a miniature stamp sheet. On 11 February 1974, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made her first visit to Norfolk Island, accompanied by their Royal Highnesses Prince Philip and Princess Anne, and Captain Mark Phillips. The visit was short at just 12 hours, and embraced by cheering islanders, who turned out in great numbers. The royal visitors arrived mid-morning from HMY Britannia, anchored conspicuously in Sydney Bay. During the day, the Queen met many locals, including descendants of the Pitcairn settlers, in Government House gardens, and she unveiled a plaque on Queen Elizabeth Lookout, named in her honour that day, and at the clubhouse of the island’s golf course. The royal party toured historical sites and lunched al fresco under towering Norfolk Pines. A formal dinner at Government House in the evening was followed by an open-air concert before the party returned to the royal yacht after dark. Next stop, Vanuatu.
