F.L.S. / Chromolithy. By J. Bien, New York 1860. Several years after John Audubon’s death his sons set out to create an American Edition of The Birds of America. They partnered with Julius Bien to transfer the original Havell images from the copper plates to lithographic stones. Then as many as thirty printing stages with hand coloring were used to recreate the fine details of the original engravings. The production began in 1858 but was brought to a sudden halt with the outbreak of the Civil War in 1860. This limited printing makes the Bien Edition the most rare of all Audubon editions.Image area is approximately 19.25” x 28.5”. Overall print size with margins is approximately 36.5” x 26”. Print was likely trimmed at some point making it 2.5” smaller than the standard Double Elephant Folio size. Very Good Condition. Minor wear consistent with age. Light soiling. Small tears around edges. Paper loss at corners. There is toning likely due to light exposure around the perimeter of image; additionally a strip of toning approximately 2” wide that runs vertical through the image area on the right side.
