Audemars Piguet might be best-known to the world today for its sporty icon, the Royal Oak, and its younger sibling, the Royal Oak Offshore, but it's the wide variety of ultra-thin vintage dress watches it produced through the 1960’s that continue to excite watch aficionados on a daily basis. On offer a seemingly straightforward dress watch from that decade that represented quite a feat for its time. The white gold case measures a mere 4mm in thickness, and it was designed to fit an even thinner manual-wound movement inside, the historic caliber 2002. This watch has some interesting visual aspects as well, which keeps this watch from being overly simple. The bezel is finished with a brushed -style finish, which is not seen very often. The dial is very minimalist, with baton markers and hands coupled with a simple brand signature at the top of the dial and the "SWISS" indication at six o'clock. This allows for the satin silver dial to maximize its beauty, that add extra dimension to the watch. The Original Dial: Signed Audemars Piguet Swiss - Unique silvered dial carries wonderful patina dressed with baton markers with matching pointed baton handset. Original Movement: The Audemars Piguet Caliber 2002. A manual movement, which has 17 jewels and a power reserve of about 35 hours. The Audemars Piguet calibre 2002 is a legendary movement indeed! Introduced in the mid 20th century and is celebrated for its elegant and functional design. This innovative design allowed for a thinner movement, rivalling Vacheron and Patek Philippe. This level of attention to detail and specialization is part of what sets AP apart in the world of horology. Audemars went to considerable trouble and expense to ensure its movements performed better than the rest, and they succeeded! These are indeed high precision movements and the example here is running perfectly, having been calibrated to run consistently accurate. This is truly outstanding for any mechanical watch of 60 plus years and it is no exaggeration – The high grade 17 jewel movement is in incredibly clean condition and has been fully inspected and tested by Swiss specialist watchmaker, with similar care and regular servicing, say every 3 to 4 years, one can expect this watch to continue to run very happily for many more decades to come! Original Case: The TV style case is of a very solid two-piece unique design with a wonderful plain brushed fixed bezel to improve water and dust resistance. The solid gold 18 carat case has rare downturn lug design and measures 33mm W excluding the crown and sits 36mm in height including the lugs. The white gold case is strong, most likely unpolished. There are some light scratches on the case, some are more noticeable on the side of the case from the caseback being opened. The brushed finish on the bezel is still very visible. The engraved numbers and the hallmarks are also visible on the caseback. Please see photos. Original Case Back Cover Outer: The brushed snap back case fits perfectly flush and opens with a satisfying ‘pop’. Numbered 54614, has surface scratches associated with precious metals commensurate with age and wear. Please see photos. The Crown/Winder: The crown is unsigned and possibly a later service replacement. In good functioning order.
