Johann Lorenz Kreul (1765 Erlbach - 1840 Nuremberg) began his studies under G. Ph. Zwinger at the Art School of Nuremberg. Apart from that, he took lessons from Ansbach court artist Friedrich Cotthard Naumann (see our last image for his work in our possession). He made numerous study trips through Germany, before settling for two years in Stuttgart on invitation of Duke of Wuerttemberg, and becoming the latter's royal portraitist. In 1807, he moved to Nuremberg. His son, Johann Friedrich Karl Kreul (1804-1867) was also a well-known portraitist. This explains why our artist is often referred to as Johann Lorenz Kreul the Elder. The sitter bears the badge of a still unidentified (Freemasonry?) order.
