Description: RHODOCHROSITE on CALCITE: Uchucchacua Mine, Uchucchacua area, Oyón District, Oyón Province, Lima, Peru. Dimensions: 8.5 x 4.4 x 4.0cm, small cabinet. Uchucchacua is a silver mine that is better known for its great, red-pink, scalenohedral Rhodochrosites like this. It's an unusual habit for the species, but is signature from this locality. This stunning piece has a cluster consisting of a just over a dozen, gemmy, red-pink, lustrous to slightly satiny, 0.5 to 1.5cm, sharply formed scalenohedral (dog-tooth) crystals that sit front-and-center on the piece. The pink-red Rhodos contrast perfectly with the cream colored Calcite that covers previously formed Quartz crystals. A standout in any display and a great piece for the locality or for Rhodochrosite in general. From finds here in the 1980s-1990s and in unusually fine condition with no damage to any of the points!
