The image of the destructive titans could have been influenced not so much by the theme of huge monsters - Kaizen, similar to Godzilla or Ghidorah, beloved by Japanese cinema, as by the paintings of the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. Several military units appear in the manga, designed to protect human settlements from titans. Soldiers are trained to fight and kill titans using a "spatial maneuvering device", abbreviated PPM.
