Description: Offered for sale: Ashton Oxenden, Our Church and Her Services (Boston: E. P. Dutton, 1866). Ashton Oxenden (1808-92) was born at Broome Park, Kent, the son of Sir Henry Oxenden, the 7th Baronet of Oxenden. He was ordained in the Anglican clergy in 1833. From 1849 to 1869 he was rector of Pluckley and in 1864 was made an honorary canon of Canterbury Cathedral. In May 1869, he was elected bishop of Montreal and metropolitan Canada by the Canadian provincial synod. From 1879-1884, Oxenden was vicar of St, Stephen's, near Canterbury and officiated as rural dean of Canterbury. Oxenden was a prolific writer and wrote numerous small theological works (his name is attached to upwards of forty-five distinct works), which were made popular by his plain and simple language. His most popular work was A Happy Old Age (1861), simple, heartfelt, spiritual, messages on important issues and topics such as duties, temptations, trials, and joys of old age. His Our Church and Her Services: London: William MacIntosh, 1866) has gone through many printings and is still in print. Offered for sale is the American edition (Boston: E. P. Dutton 1866). It was adapted for use in the American Episcopal Church by Rev. F. D. (Frederick Dan) Huntington (1819-1904), the first Episcopal bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. The book is inscribed and signed by Rev. Oscar B. Thayer 1832-1908). Thayer served in the Diocese of Illinois. The inscription is dated Christmas 1869 and was a "souvenir" for faithful Sunday school teaching at Chicago's Church of the Atonement Mission. The website of the church states its first services were held on June 17, 1888 but according to the online journals of the annual meetings of the Illinois Diocese of the Episcopal Church for 1869 and 1870, Thayer was rector of the Church of the Atonement (there were 46 families in 1869). Hardcover, 1st American edition; 179 pp; gilt lettering on front and spine; much of spine is missing missing (but gilt title remains); page toning.
