Description: In December, 1981, Italian designer Ettore Sottsass founded a group of artists and designers called The Memphis Group. named for the Bob Dylan song "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again", which was playing on repeat during the group’s first meeting.Created as a reaction to the status quo, the group centered their thinking around "radical, funny, and outrageous" design, disregarding what was considered to be in good taste at the time. The group reconvened in February, 1981, bringing with them some 100 drawings, picturing a variety of bold, colorful designs inspired by Art Deco, Pop Art, and 1950s Kitsch. The group went on to create furniture, fabrics, ceramics, lamps, and flooring in their distinctly postmodern style, incorporating colorful laminate, terrazzo, and a proprietary pattern known as Bacterio. The Memphis Group was active from 1981 until 1988, creating the template for what has become known as 80s design. ________________________ This piece was produced in the early 1980s by Gino Sarfatti's Milan studio, Arteluce, the creator of the influential Sputnik and Jo-Jo "lollipop" chandeliers.
