This vase is 14 inches tall x 9 x 9 inches diameter in an oval shape with purples, blues, gold leaf and dichroic rainbow splash design, hand blown and cased in clear glass, 2004. Tim Lazer approaches his art with a combined love for the medium of glass with a gifted technique and with the knowledge that the fugitive nature of hot glass will forever present him with challenges to overcome. Tim's ever-changing philosophy about nature of his art is reflected in his pieces. His current work reflects his fascination with simple organic shapes and the lustrous colors and surfaces usually associated with Art Nouveau style. Using traditional glassblowing methods, Tim creates each piece at the end of a blow pipe, working the glass at temperatures over 2000 degrees. He blows each piece of glass freely without molds and works primarily with glass he has made himself. Tim's shapes are simple with thin lines or wide swirls of brightly colored glass. For colored glass he makes combinations of metallic oxides and rare earth elements like silver, cobalt, gold and copper that he mixes in molten glass. He uses a variety of colored enamels, the same crushed glass powders used in cloisonne and precious metals. These elements melt and fuse together as they touch the hot glass creating unique surfaces and luster. As a result, Tim is able to achieve his beautiful lustrous pieces. Tim studied glassblowing in the early 1970s at Palomar College and California State University, Fullerton. A vase this size sells in Galleries for 1500-2500 dollars.
