Description: African Womens. Bas-relief. Art Deco era. France. Style Paul GAUGUIN, Anne QUINQUAUD, Alfred JANNIOT LARGE & EXCEPTIONAL BAS RELIEF 1920-1930.. DAILY LIFE OF AFRICAN WOMEN Large & exceptional bas-relief sculpture which dates from the 1920s-1930s and which represents a beautiful scene of life with 3 African women busy with daily tasks...The sculpture is not signed but everything in its quality suggests the presence of an excellent artist and certainly a sculptor of the French school because of the modern style which mixes simplified lines and round shapes: we feel a lot of strength in the composition and this can be reminiscent of the influence of Paul Gauguin (1848 -1903). A quick search on the web reveals a relative rarity of this type of "sculpted bas relief" theme compared to the orientalist paintings which were very numerous during the colonial period: it would be necessary to carry out investigations on the side of a sculptor from the name of Anna Quinquaud (1890-1984) an excellent artist of whom we can see some bas-reliefs on the web and in particular a work entitled "Mother source of sweetness" whose manner is not very far from the work proposed here. A similar style of bas-reliefs (by Alfred Janniot) can be found on facade Palais de la Porte Dorée (Musée national histoire de l'immigration) in Paris (France). The Palais de la Porte Dorée was built for the International Colonial Exhibition of 1931. Signed by big names in the Art-Déco style (Laprade, Prouvé, Ducos de la Haille, Subes...), the architecture and decorations of the Palace bear witness to the grandeur of the French colonial empire at that time, as does the Tropical Aquarium which has been preserved in the basement. The Palais de la Porte Dorée successively hosted the Museum of the Colonies, the Museum of Overseas France and the Museum of the Arts of Africa and Oceania before the opening of the National City of the History of the immigration in 2007. Bas-relief is large - size (wood): 92 cm x41 cm / weight: approximately 4-5 kg. The bas-relief was bought a long time ago in France. This is a very rare and beautiful item for Art Deco lovers. The bas-relief can be hung on the wall or above the door to create a portal. This can be a perfect addition to introduce a wonderful exotic atmosphere to the interior. This is certainly a real bargain for a collector or interior decorator. You can frame this bas-relief in a similar way to the photo I attached. If you want, you can make a frame the bas-relief with plaster stucco. This will look very good too.
