(Next in the series: Tiger I and T-34.) The arrival of the Panzer III tank in 1937 represented a turning point in the process of the creation of the Panzerwaffe, Germany's armored forces. It was the first truly fully operational battle tank, designed and built in Germany, and was planned to become the dominant machine on future battlefields. Although over time it became apparent that it could not keep up with the rapid pace of development (and its role was taken over by the Panzer IV), it lived to see eight basic versions (Ausführung) and a number of special conversions. During its service it saw cannons of three different calibers and carried several armour variants. It took part in battles in the hell of the hot African deserts as well as in equally demanding deployments in the harsh Russian winters. Eventually, it reached the point where further technical improvements to the concept were not practical and perhaps not even possible. At least 15 examples of this machine have survived to this day, and this publication includes the story of the thorough restoration of one of them.
