Armorial Newman Chinese Export porcelain Soup Plates Ch'ien Lung 1790 Museum

Description: Chinese Export Armorial Newman Family Soup Plates These stunning soup plates feature the arms of the Newman family and date to c. 1790. Part of this service is in possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and was formerly part of the Helena Woolworth McCann Collection. One of these plates has either a museum number or collection number to the back. I am also listing the matching platter to these pieces. The plates feature a deep hatched blue border with Nanking type dagger edges. The Newton family was settled near Wincanton and later Wintercreech Park in Somerset. Sir Richard Newman was created a baronet in 1699. The center of the crest is surmounted by the coronet of a baron. This augmentation was granted by King Charles to Colonel Newman for his loyalty at the battle of Worcester. The estate was eventually passed to first cousins once removed in 1775 and the service was likely made for one of these cousins.
