Notes: Medieval Republic of Siena was a historic state consisting of the city of Siena and its surrounding territory in Tuscany, central Italy. It existed for over 400 years, from 1125 to 1555. Siena prospered as a city-state, gradually expanded throughout southern Tuscany, and became one of the major economic powers of the Middle Ages. As such it was one of the most important commercial, financial and artistic centers in Europe as well as a major center of money lending and an important player in the wool trade.It was governed at first directly by its bishop, but episcopal power declined during the later 12th century and the bishop was forced to concede a greater say in the running of the city to the nobility. This process culminated in 1167 when the commune of Siena declared its independence from episcopal control and by 1179, it had a written constitution.In the Italian War of 1551–59 the republic was defeated by the rival Republic of Florence in alliance with the Spanish crown.
