Overview: We are pleased present this wonderful Chinese Bronze Vessel elegant styled after the ancient patterns of the Song dynasty, crafted as a decorative or functional metal ware by Ming Dynasty craftsman in veneration of their ancient ancestry. xxxx Items like this were popular among Ming dynasty literati elites, and Chinese masters as ceremony practitioners of the 16th and 17th centuries. This particular vessel must have been used during ritual ceremonies, as a storage vessel of grain, used by the departed in the afterlife. Description: An exquisite example contoured in a bulbous ‘Hu’ shape with a decorative lid, and delicately carved Taotie Mask handles in moulded relief on both shoulders, with two paralled bands filled with incised Chinese Shou characters, complimented by Rudi designs above and below. The archaic style lid with similar motif and three ornate handles, are decorated in a similar motif of a Rudi ring encircling the rim. xxxx A very heavy piece primarily cast of bronze, with the surface covered with a fine chocolate brown patina, with patches of natural malachite encrustation. xxxx The vessel is in excellent condition, except for a few ‘pi’ holes in the base from casting flaws.
