In 1921 he joined the French air force, and he qualified as a military pilot a year later. In 1926 he joined the Compagnie Latécoère in Toulouse and helped establish airmail routes over northwest Africa, the South Atlantic, and South America. In 1944 he took off on a flight over France and disappeared. "The Little Prince" was first published in 1943 and became Saint-Exupéry’s most successful piece of work. The book has sold an estimated 140 million copies and has been translated into 505 different languages and dialects worldwide, being the second most translated work. The Little Prince was inspired by Saint-Exupéry's own experience when he and his co-pilot crashed into the Sahara desert in 1935. They were lost in the desert for almost a week, suffering dehydration and were close to death when a passing Bedouin caravan found them and saved them. The Little Prince has been adapted to numerous art forms and media, including audio recordings, radio plays, live stage, film, television, ballet, and opera.
