Description: Antique French Austrian Bohemian Decorative Plate, La Rochelle, Harbor, Seascape, Boat, Atlantic Coast, Belle Epoque Era This antique Austrian wall plate was made for the French market and depicts in colored bas-relief the harbor of La Rochelle. It is marked “La Rochelle. Le Bateau des Iles sortant du Port” (the island boat leaving the port). The view shows the entrance of the harbor with the “Tour de la Chaîne” on the lefthand side and the “Tour Saint-Nicolas” on the righthand side. In the background, the bell tower of the Church of Saint-Sauveur can be seen above the row of buildings along the Quai Dupéré. In the foreground is the paddle steamer that goes from the port to the nearby Ile de Ré. The border of the plate is designed with engraved motifs and flowers. The back is stamped in relief with the number “10731”, the inscription “Importé de Bohême” and the maker’s mark “W.S.&.S.”, the mark of Wilhelm Schiller & Sohns, ceramic manufacturers in Bodenbach, Bohemia, between 1829 and 1914. Wilhelm Schiller & Sohns developed a series of decorative plates illustrating popular tourist sites in Europe, particularly in France, German and Italy. With a hook on the back for hanging, this plate is in good condition with the exception signs of wear on the painted surface lending a lovely aged patina.
