Description: Antique Wood Religious Christmas Creche Madonna Virgin Mary, Brass Halo, Spain Click images to enlarge Description ANTIQUE HAND CARVED MADONNA SANTOS STATUE Wonderful antique hand carved wood religious statue of a kneeling Madonna measuring about 7" in height and 3-3/4" wide. Featuring a beautiful figure of the Virgin Mary, she is depicted with head down, hands clasped, resting on one knee - completely carved from wood, bearing a thin layer of applied gesso and then hand painted in pastels as shown. Complete with pierced brass metal halo which is pin mounted to the head back (original), condition is lovely with no wood chips, repairs, or damage. As you can see, there is paint chipping and loss around the bottom within the grass area, overall soiling, discoloration and age related display wear -- there are several fine shrinkage cracks to the wood on the underside as well - these are stable and do not detract or show other than as fine lines around the bottom edge. This was purchased in Spain at a church sale, and dates to the late 1800s. It is a fine religious statue - beautifully finished, softly colored and moving.
