Description: Antique Wheeling Pottery Co. Avon Pink Tulip Pitcher The Wheeling Pottery Co. was established in 1879 in Wheeling, West Virginia. The company produced a variety of wares. By 1903 the Wheeling Potteries company was organized by combining the Wheeling, LaBelle, Riverside and Avon potteries and operated as four separate departments. The Avon department made artware until about 1905. The company went into receivership in 1910 and thereafter operated as the Wheeling Sanitary Manufacturing Company manufacturing porcelain sanitary pottery. This piece is considered a precursor to Roseville's similarly embossed floral designs. It has what is known as the ink-stamped Avon church mark which shows W. P. Co. for Wheeling Potteries. (Please see photos.) It has a lovely pink painted tulip design with green leaves on a semi-porcelain whiteware. The pottery looks a little yellow in some of the photos but it is a clean, crisp white. The pitcher is approximately 7 3/16 inches tall at the spout and approximately 7 inches wide at the widest point including the handle. It is approximately 5 1/2 inches wide near the base. It is in very nice vintage condition. Are are no cracks but there is all-over crazing which is expected on a piece with this age. (Please see photos.) There is a very small chip on the base but it is very small and does not detract from the piece. (Please see photos.) There is very little paint loss to either the green leaves or the pink tulips. (Please see photos.) A lovely pitcher for display in a rustic or French country kitchen or MCM pink kitchen. Would be lovely on your table with a big bouquet of Spring tulips or daffodils.
