Description: W & T Avery LTD., English Antique Brass Balance Beam Class B Shop Scale with Mahogany base made in Birmingham U.K., late 1800s. Complete with set of brass W &T Avery weights. This type of scale was used in stores to measure dry goods such as grains, seeds, flour etc. This impressive scale is all original save the screw at the top. Interesting provenance: This scale was among the items in an estate passed down from well known (see internet) wealthy entrepreneur, economist and business theorist Roger Ward Babson to his grand daughter. (Roger was the 10th generation of Babsons living in Gloucester, MA., beginning with Isabel Babson who came to Massachusetts from England in 1637). There is a painting (not included in listing but just shown as a reference), in her possession that shows Roger’s Babson’s father, Nathaniel Babson, owner of N. Babson & Co. a Dry Goods and Mercantile Shop where this countertop scale was used. The business was located at 117 Main St. in Gloucester, Massachusetts and listed the New England Business directory for 1883. Scale will be disassembled for shipping. Scale measures approximately 23”tall X 20”wide X 10”deep and weighs 10.3 lbs.
