It is made of cherry and retains its original finish. The table top has an oval form w/scalloped edges. The legs have a cabriole design and there is an oval shelf nested in between legs. On one side of the table, there is a writing tablet which slides out from under the top. It has a black, Formica veneer which is scratch proof. The previous owner used the tablet to hold his drinks; you could see 2 whitish, circular water stains on it. Although he should've used coasters, at least he didn't use the top itself to hold his drinks--the top is free of stains.There are nicks and scratches all over, but since they are not deep, they may be minimized by using a stain pen or an oil which restores old stain/finish. There are no breaks, cracks, chips, gouges, rot, or warp. Our carpenter thoroughly inspected the piece and found no repairs to make, nor anything to glue or reinforce. All of the joints are strong, the tablet slides in and out with ease, and the table is sturdy and ready for another lifetime of service!
