Description: Don't know exactly what this Hexagonal "Pen" body originally was used for. To me, it looks like it was part of an early drafting set. The tip has a metal insert that is threaded with a 6-32 UNC-2B x 3/8" deep. I have had some old inking drafting sets and the individual scribe type ink line drawing tips usually fit into a "holder". This may be from an early set. The body measures .290/.300 across the flats of the Hex. Overall length is 4 3/4". The name "C.D. MF'G CO. N.Y." is on the body. I found a glass ink well by GEM with a 1912 patent being sold that had Bakelite Lids having the name, "C.&D.MF'G CO. N.Y." inside that were made for GEM. Only makes sense that they would have an ink pen to go with it. It's in good shape. Couple of nicks. Thread is good on the insert. I originally assumed this is Bakelite, since the ink well lids were listed as being Bakelite. But, I did test it. It passed the pin test and did not melt. So, it is not a thermal plastic. But, on the rub test, it smells more like "burned rubber" than the typical electrical insulator burned smell. So, I'm pretty sure it is Ebonite. This was a material used by pen manufactures at the turn of the century. Strong material that can be machined and polished. And it is made from rubber. Hope someone can use this.
