Description: For your consideration is this gorgeous Antique Tibetan Silver Tang Tea Bowl. The tea bowl (por-pa) is one of the most common utensils among the peoples of Tibet and elsewhere in the Himalayas. This one is made from turned wood (likely Rhododendron Burlwood), which has been finished in a deep red color. This bowl is lined with hammered sheet silver. Silver was often chosen for the construction of these bowls, as it leaves no aftertaste and is second only to gold on the Himalayan-Buddhist scale of purity-pollution. These bowls were primarily used to drink brick tea blended with yak butter. The tea was pounded to break up the block, then boiled and blended with rancid butter and salt. The exterior of the bowl is wrapped around the foot and lower part of bowl with heavy silver frieze work. The detailed design work was done by hand, and it is incredibly intricate, and includes fish and the Phoenix. The details are absolutely stunning. The valuation of these pieces is quite wide, with silver lined bowls generally coming in between $200 and $700. We believe this bowl dates to the 19th century based on the silver work, which is similar to other confirmed pieces from this era. This Antique Tibetan Silver Tang Tea Bowl is in good vintage condition. There are a few minor dings and scratches, which is consistent with age and use (to be expected for a piece that is ~200 years old). Overall, this is a gorgeous example. This is Antique Tibetan Silver Tang Tea Bowl 5-7/8 inches wide, 3 inches tall, and it rests on a 3-1/8 inch base.
