Description: Antique woodcut etching book plate on paper titled Ha! Ha! very good by artist Thomas Landseer for a series of anthropomorphic Monkey characters that he illustrated and etched in 1827 for the book Monkeyana or Men in Miniature. The etchings depict various monkey characters with different titles and classical quotes. This etching includes a quote from the character Lodovico "Are his wits safe? is he not light of brain?" from Shakespeare's Othello. The piece is signed in the etching and you can see a plate mark along the bottom edge of the etching under glass. This piece is framed in a contemporary wood and gesso frame with a gilded finish. The frame includes an ivory linen matt and coordinating fillet design under glass and the back has paper seal and sawtooth hanger. All inquiries and offers welcome. Etching under glass measures 8" H x 6-3/8" W. The framed piece measures 16-1/2" H x 14-1/2" W x 1-1/2" D. CONDITION: The etching as seen under glass is in excellent condition with light yellowing. The frame has a chip in the gesso on the lower left side edge that faces the wall and light flaking of the gesso on some of the corner edges.
